The Little Office

1.  Preparatory Prayer (with commentary)

2.  Matins (night prayer.  Traditionally, the Little Office was begun after midnight but before sunrise, however, for purposes of private devotion one can recite Matins on the previous evening, early in the morning, or immediately preceding Lauds.  If one chooses to begin the office at some other hour, the inviatory, i.e., Psalm 95, is to be said.   It  opens  the  Matin  prayers.

3.  Lauds (morning prayer.  Traditionally prayed before dawn, or in the early morning.)

4.  Prime  (no longer used in the modern revision.  For private devotion it can be prayed in conjunction with Lauds or Terce.)
